You don’t need a gym membership or a home full of equipment to start building strength. A handful of simple bodyweight moves can work your legs, upper body, and core — no matter your current fitness level.

1. Bodyweight squats — lower body

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then lower yourself as if sitting into a chair, keeping your chest up and weight in your heels. Push through your feet to stand back up. Focus on control rather than speed, especially when starting out.

2. Glute bridges — lower body

Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Press through your heels to lift your hips, squeezing your glutes at the top, then lower back down slowly. This is a gentle way to strengthen the posterior chain without any strain on the knees.

3. Push-ups (or an easier variation) — upper body

Hands slightly wider than shoulders, body in a straight line from head to heels, lower your chest toward the floor and push back up. If a full push-up is too challenging, try an incline version with your hands on a sturdy chair or counter.

4. Plank — core

Forearms on the floor, body in a straight line, hold the position without letting your hips sag or rise. A few well-controlled seconds is a fine starting point — you can build up duration over time.

5. Gentle full-body stretching — recovery

Finish with a few minutes of stretching for your legs, back, and shoulders. Ease into each stretch gently — there’s no need to push to the point of discomfort for it to be effective.

You don’t need much to get started

These five moves cover the basics: legs, upper body, core, and recovery — all without a single piece of equipment. As with any new routine, focus on form over repetitions, and increase difficulty gradually as it starts to feel easier.

Movement is just one piece of the wellness puzzle. If you want a broader look at how your habits fit together, MyFreeHealthReport’s free questionnaire can help.
